In-School Residencies and Performances

BKSTEPPERS offers residencies that are structured to implement and achieve the goals of the New York City Department of Education’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and the New York State Learning Standards in the Arts for Pre K–12 grade students. Residencies can also be linked to students’ academic curriculum. Experienced teachers conduct these classes.

Residencies include hands-on learning of songs, dances, and music from the particular cultures, as well as contextual information about the countries and traditions represented.

The residencies serve to foster students’ knowledge and appreciation of music, dance, and world cultures through interaction with high-quality professional musicians in workshops and concerts.

Support materials, including a welcome packet and Teachers’ Resource Guide, are included in most programs. These materials serve as an introduction to the BKSTEPPERS organization and also contain, pre- and post-performance discussion ideas, lessons, a glossary, and more. BKSTEPPERS in-school residencies are customized to fit a school’s schedule and budgetary needs.
Private and independent schools and community organizations should contact the staff of BKSTEPPERS for individual residency options and costs.
