What we do

OVERVIEW

Overview

Research has shown that arts education correlates with improved learning and achievement for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. By engaging with music and dance enrichment, young people are generally more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, and avoid gang involvement and substance abuse. However, over the past decade, budget challenges and shifting educational priorities have removed all but the minimum obligatory arts programming from poorer public schools in New York City. Compounded by the recent COVID-19 crisis, access to affordable and culturally relevant arts programming has become even more challenging for low-income, minority communities in Brooklyn where arts education programs were already few and far between.
The BKSteppers have become a cultural staple in the arts community for having performed for elected officials, professional recording artists, and increasingly-frequent appearances in television and other media. As the premier marching arts organization in New York City, the BKSteppers is dedicated to bringing quality music education experiences to young people living in the historically underserved communities of New York City and teaching them the value of personal excellence through the marching arts.

OUR PROGRAMS

In-School and After-School Residencies

In-school and After-school residencies provide a comprehensive introduction to music and dance for middle or high school students. Residencies serve 30 students over 15 weeks, and typically offer two sessions per week. Led by Teaching Artists, sessions focus on hands-on learning of songs, dance, music, and percussion instruments from particular cultures as well as contextual information about the countries and traditions represented. Students will also learn basic musical concepts like time, rhythm, and meter. In addition to technical skills, students will learn the core values of being part of a large musical ensemble including teamwork, commitment, and discipline. Each residency culminates in a performance.

Battle of the Drumlines

Regionally and nationally, various associations and organizations exist solely to organize and host events and competitions that provide marching bands, drum corps, and drumlines the opportunity to not only compete, but to expose their friends, families and the local community to the marching arts activity. In New York City, however, such an entity does not exist for the show-style drumline arena.

The Battle of the Drumlines was created as an extension of our mission to enhance the physical and social development of youth through the marching arts activity and to provide the New York City community with an opportunity to experience the excitement that is show-style marching band and drumlines.

The Battle of the Drumlines is a community and family-centered event that brings together high school and community-based drumlines in a positive and friendly competition.
